There’s a reader for every word

Are you a writer with a story to tell but doubt your ability? Do you tell yourself, “No-one will want to read my story.”?

Let me reassure you that there is a reader for every word. No, your style and ideas will not appeal to everyone who comes across them. No, not every reader will want to seek out your writing. But, someone will love it.

Variety is what makes us humans different to robots. Variety is what keeps the economy flowing. I mean really, do we need 25 different brands of tomato sauce? There was a time when the population survived on only one.

Imagine thirty people are sitting in a conference room. The speaker tells them to look around and select one thing that stands out to them, something that interests them about the room. Among the selections will be the colour scheme, structural elements such as the materials or the layout, furniture, furnishings, damage to the walls and floors. Some will notice people – what they are wearing, their expressions, perceived reasons for being there, hairstyles. Others will notice the view out the different windows.

The next task is to write about the item you selected. Now, suppose five of them selected the furniture. One could write about the manufacturing, another the colour, another the arrangement.

When we write, we write about topics that interest us – from the way WE see the world. When we decide to write it, we decide on a genre, plot, theme and the characters who will best represent this story. The same story can be told in different genres, for different audiences – imagine a love story for a three-year-old and a love story for an adult audience (very different). No two people see the world in exactly the same way – and no two writers create the same story from what they have seen in their life.

Don’t be afraid to tell YOUR story. It’s exactly what somebody wants to read.
